WALK-OUT OF VAN DRIVERS IN HASTINGS DISTRICT

HASTINGS, This Day (P.A.).—Due to a walk-out on the part of van drivers, deliveries of bread in Hastings and surroundiri’g districts were disorganised this morning. However, though the deliveries were later than usual, they were effected by the bakers themselves and volunteer drivers undertaking the work. ■ Penal rates of pay for back overtime are understood to be the basis of the dispute that arose between the drivers and the Bakers’ Bread Supply Company, the organisation responsible for delivering bread to depots and householders.

According to the manager, of the company the dispute came to a head yesterday when the workers presented an ultimatum to the company that unless a settlement "was effected by 5 p.m. yesterday the drivers would not return to work this morning. The drivers did not put in an appearance this morning. Only five drivers are concerned in the actual walk-out but it is understood that other men are directly interested in the dispute.
