Crossing-keeper To Be Sought For Tainui Street

After criticising once again the warning equipment at the Tainui street railway crossing, the Westland Progress League last evening decided to request the Minister of Railways, Mr R. Semple, to appoint a crossing keeper. Failing such an appointment being approved, the league decided to indicate that it desired the institution of other safety measures more satisfactory than the present one. During a discussion of the proposal, it was pointed out that in a check-up conducted by transport authorities last November, it was found that between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m. on a Wednesday 2762 cycles and motor-cycles passed over the crossing, together with 1666 motor-cars, 753 heavy trade vehicles, 194 buses and 2533 pedestrians. In that time 112 trains had travelled across the street. The president, Mr G. R. Harker, pointed out that the proposal to. have a bus depot on Petrie avenue had interfered with a plan x to change the warning devices by installing an “island” warning light.
