POWER FAILURE AT

WALLSEND MINE

The Wallsend State Mine was idle again today, for the second successive day, as the result of mechanical faults..

Yesterday, a fault developed in the mine cage equipment and repairs could not be affected in time to allow the mine to work. The cage was ready for work this morning but a power failure was experienced in early hours of the morning and this in turn idled the mine.

The power failure was due to a “short” in the mine sub-station and as a result the fan stopped from 3.50 to 5.22 a.m., making it impossible to work the mine until late in the day. Shiftmen commenced ‘ work this afternoon and coal production will be resumed tomorrow.
