NORTHERN IRELAND WILL MAINTAIN UNION WITH ENGLAND
PARIS, August 17 (Rec. 11.5 a.m.). The people of Northern Ireland were determined to maintain union with England and Scotland, Sir Ronald Ross, Conservative member of the British House of Commons for Northern Ireland, told the European Assembly today. Replying to speeches by the Irish Deputy Premier, Mr William Norton, and a former Premier, Mr de Valera, Sir Ronald said that Mr Norton’s charge that Northern Ireland was “occupied” by British troops was dangerous nonsense. “The British Army is our army. Why should we be deprived of it? If we were, we would resist with all' our force any attempt to bring us under the domination of the Irish Republic.” When Mr de Valera, raised the Irish petition question in the Assembly today, he did so without making any demand for action. He said: “I am sure you can understand with what a cynical smile the Irish citizen would regard you if you spoke to him about uniting into a single unit several States of Europe with their diverse national traditions, as long as he contemplates how his 1 own country is kept divided against his will.”
