SECRET WILL SOON BE KNOWN: FIRST JET BOMBER
LONDON, August .16 (Rec. 11.20 a.m.). —The secrecy ban on Britain’s first jet bomber, which is a herald of aerial attack at speeds faster than sound, will probably be lifted before the end of this month, says Reuters. The pioneer plane, the Canberra, has a speed approaching 600 miles an hour and it will make its first public appearance at the Society of British Aircraft Constructors’ Exhibition at Farnborough, Hampshire, in September. Larger bombers, equipped with four jet engines, are already being developed. The Canberra is presumed to fulfil the British Supply Ministry order for a medium range bomber powered by two jet engines and capable of twice the speed of the Royal Air Force’s standard post-war heavy bomber, the Avro Lincoln.
