ATTACK ON BRITAIN BY IRISH LEADER AT EUROPEAN ASSEMBLY

PARIS, August .16 (Rec. 11.45 a.m.). —Mr William Norton, Ireland’s deputy Prime Minister, stunned the European Assembly into uneasy silence today by making the first _ attack by one of the 12 member-nations on another. He attacked Britain in his claim for Ireland to have the six counties, now forming part of the United Kingdom. He said: “In our . relations with Britain for many hundreds of years we have tasted violence and persecution in unrationed form. We ask Britain to cease those methods.” Mr Norton said that Britain was occupying the countries against the will of the overwhelming majority of the people. Britain functioned in that area as an occupying Power, he said. ' When the Irish leader sat down there was not a sound for a full painute. The tension was broken by the acting President, M. Francois De Menthon (France), who appealed to members to preserve “a tone of moderation and courtesy.”
