WEST BERLIN ADMITTED TO MARSHALL AID
BERLIN, August 16 (Rec. 9.10 a.m.). —West Berlin has been admitted to Marshall Aid. Announcing this today, Mr John J. McCloy, United States High Commissioner in Germany, said that the initial grant of £5,000,000 had been authorised. His announcement came six days after Frau Louise Schroeder, Western Berlin’s Deputy Lord . Mayor, had stated that the city was facing a complete financial breakdown and increased unemployment. Mr McCloy said that the first appropriation would cover the development of the West Berlin power station. Grants for a coal-mining project were being discussed, but no overall programme had been approved or submitted. Western commanders in Berlin today approved the emergency budget for the city government. This showed a deficit of nearly £2Q,000,000. The four military commandants will meet on Thursday in their third attempt to bring Occupied Germany .back to normal. Earlier today, Mi' McCloy said tnat steps towards admitting the new West German Government to _ the Council of Europe would be “highly desirable.” He would not commit himself to any particular form'of admission but said that “intermediate steps” had been under discussion.
