GOVERNMENT POLICY STATEMENT ON SALT INDUSTRY AWAITED

(P.A.) BLENHEIM, This Day. It was unofficially indicated in Blenheim today that the Government policy in connection with the Lake Grassmere salt project may shortly be announced. The likelihood is, it is stated, that the time is not far off when New Zealand’s salt requirements will be produced within the Dominion.

In November of last year, a comprehensive survey of the Grassmere undertaking was made by an American expert, Professor Badger, who also, at the invitation of the Government, inspected several lo«calities in New Zealand with a view to establishing a salt industry. It is understood that his report, which may soon be presented to Parliament, is extremely favourable to the Grassmere project. Meanwhile, work at Grassmere is being pushed ahead.
