CAR PASSENGER INJURED IN CROSSING SMASH

When a motor-cai' in which he was a passenger was struck by ,a goods train on the Hornby level crossing at 9 p.m. yesterday, John Brown, of Waterloo road, Islington, suffered head injuries. He was admitted to the Christchurch Public Hospital. The driver of the car was R. Mayer, aged 17, of Finsbury street, Islington, and Miss M. Carpenter, of Mortlake street, Islington, was also a passenger in the car. Both Mayer and Miss Carpenter suffered only superficial injuries. Mr Brown, had a remarkable escape from more serious injury. The car, which approached the crossing from the north side, struck thg train near the tender of the engine, and it was extensively damaged. The engine was badly twisted and broken and a door damaged. The train, according to those who saw the accident, stopped quickly, and when helpers reached the scene Mr Brown s head was on the railway track, between the wheels of a wagon.
