RUGBY FOOTBALL NORTHERN COMMENT ON HENDERSON’S GAME AT AUCKLAND
The remarkable performance of the Auckland Rugby wing threequarters, J. K. McLean, in outplaying his All Black opponent, P. Henderson, in the special match with the Barbarians last Saturday, has apparently caused many enthusiasts to believe that Henderson’s place in the 1949 team should be forfeited to McLean, says a writer in the New Zea-r land Herald. The conclusion, ol course, is futile. McLean was as much outplayed when he opposed the Maori, N. Cherrington, in the Auckland-Northland All Black trial match at Whangarei, and he lost his chance of again representing New Zealand m that match. Hendersons progress to the All Blacks was not easy. He was outplayed by W?A. Meates when Wanganui challenged Otago lor the Hanfurly Shield, and one of the three New Zealand selectors to the end opposed his selection. Nevertheless, Henderson developed and maintained more consistent form than McLean has shown this season, Ind his displays in the final All Black trial and in the inter-island match were of s very fine standaicl.
