REORAPA SHOWS PROMISE AS JUMPER

[SPECIAL TO STAR]

CHRISTCHURCH, This Day.

All of the Riccarton horses engaged at Trentham on Saturday have gone north, with the exception of Finigan, who gave a disappointing display at Washdyke last week, and worked poorly on Tuesday. N. Crombie received facial injuries and bruises in a motor mishap on Monday ,but was able to ride work yesterday - and will be at Trentham. His mounts will be Fortune’s Smile, Caronia, Garry, Urenui’s Gift and Primitive.

Reorapa would no doubt win hurdle races if lie could be depended upon to jump cleanly. There is no doubt about his speed, and he had a big break on the field when he fell in the hurdle event at Washdyke last Saturday. His rider, M. G. Murry, suffered a broken shoulder. On Tuesday Reorapa was paired with Martial Chief “iu. a schooling bout, and although jumping wildly showed his customary dash, risking but safely negotiating his fences and he was well clear of Martial Chief when the latter crashed at the fourth fence. Reorapa carried on for another two, but without a mate was inclined to stop at each. Reorapa, who was a smart flat performer in the North Island, will require a lot of schooling before he can be depended upon. Peter Louis Collected £lO,OOO In Cash Wellington owner Mr P. Louis landed a betting coup at Ballarat on October 6 when Sir Fellowship won the Welter Handicap, seven furlongs. Ridden by a cross-country jockey, the Robin Goodfellow gelding caught the bookmakers and big professional punters unawares. It was Sir Fellowship’s first start for six months, and the New Zealand owner backed the horse substantially at profitable odds. Mr Louis collected nearly £lO,OOO in cash from the bookmakers, and the win gave him a change of luck in Australia. In the race Sir Fellowship, who is engaged in the Melbourne Cup, finished brilliantly, and now that he has struck winning form he should go on to further successes.

Lord Latour Scratched Lord Latour was scratched at 11.25 a.m. today for the October Hack Handicap at the Wellington spring meeting on Saturday.—(P.A.)

Interference At Opaki A splendid contest for the Masterton Cup last Saturday was marred by interference less than 100 yards from the post when the winner, Welcome Guest, ran in on Ballinagh who passed the trouble on to Batley. After a lengthy inquiry the stewards decided to take no action. It was found tha-t Welcome Guest had run in under the whip and that his rider, McFarlane, had twice stopped riding the horse. The stewaids expressed the view that the incident was accidental and was not due to any fault of the rider. Welcome Guest is a five-year-old horse raced in partnership by J. H. Jefferd and Mrs L. Campbell who were the leading trainers last season. This stable also won a division of the two-year-old race with Super Snipe and both horses were riaden by McFarlane.

Trainer’s Record When the Takanini trainer F. Smith won the Great Northern Guineas with Tauloch and the Welcome Stakes with Gold Script at Ellerslie last Saturday he completed a rather unusual sequence in both races. Smith has now trained the winner of the Great Northern Guineas on each alternate year since 1942. His first win in the race was with Representative in 1942, followed by My Bonnie in 1944, Majesty m 1946, and Tauloch in 1948. Furthermore, all these horses also won the Avondale Guineas run a month earlier than the Great Northern Guineas. Twelve months ago the Takanini trainer produced Tauloch. Regalitiy and Coonbridge to finish first, second and fourth respectively in the A.R.C. Welcome Stakes. He saddled up three youngsters for the same race on Saturday, and again they ran first, second and fourth, Gold Script winning from Lord Cranleigh, with Denebridge fourth.
