POWER SUPPLY FOR HARIHARI: EARLY STEPS ARE TAKEN

-The possibility of establishing a small hydro-electric plaqt to serve the heeds of the Hari Hari district is being investigated, and a survey of the requirements of residents has been undertaken during the past week. A site for the proposed hydro works is reported to have been selected on Bell’s creek, a tributary of the Big Wanganui river which it joins several miles above the bridge. The provision of electricity for this area has been investigated on several occasions prior to the war, but even then, it is reported, the cost was found to be prohibitive. A turbine and other power house equipment is required as well as a dam, water races, power lines and house reticulation.

Nothing is known in Greymouth of the scheme, which is apparently being sponsored by local residents, independent of the State Hydro Department or the chief distributing authority cn the West Coast, the Grey Power Beard. If the scheme is brought to fruition, Hari Hari will be the third South Westland area to provide its own powei’ supply, the other districts being Ross and Wataroa. Private power generators are used in the glacier region, but there is no general district scheme.
