MAORI POSTMISTRESS STOLE £259: BRIEF PERIOD OF TRAINING

(P.A.) AUCKLAND, This Day.Rangi. Manahi, a Maori and former waitress, who was appointed postmistress at Whakarewarewa last year after a fortnight’s training, appeared for sentence in the Supreme Court today for the theft of sums of money totalling £259. At Rotorua last month she admitted the theft while acting as a servant of the Government.

Mr Sinclair, counsel for the prisoner, said the prisoner had been left in sole charge of the post office. Mi- Justice Stanton remanded Manahi for a week so that she could give a detailed account of what had happened to the money. The girl had accounted for £4O but was unable to do so for the remainder of the money.
