PILOTS’ STRIKE AT SYDNEY AND NEWCASTLE PORTS
(Recd. 1 p.m.) SYDNEY, This Day. A strike by Sydney and Newcastle harbour pilots has extended to the crew of the pilot steamer Captain Cook, as well as the masters of the harbour tugs, with the result that no overseas shipping can enter or leave Sydney, except at the master’s risk. The strike is expected to end later today when Mr Hamilton Knight, Federal conciliation commissioner, calls a compulsory conference of the parties, as the secretary of the Merchant Service Guild, Captain W. G. Lawrence, has stated that the men will return to work if Mr Knight begins the hearing of their claims. ° The pilots, whose annual earnings are limited to £9lO, are asking for an increase to £1250 and reduced hours to 40 weekly.
