MARIST SCORED ONLY ONE TRY AT HOKITIKA
An unconverted try and a field goal both scored in the first half, gave Marist a narrow victory over Hokitika in the match as Cass Square, Hokitika, yesterday. Marist was without the services of V. Meates, F. Malloy and, after the first 10 minutes, J. Mundy, but the Hokitika team confirmed its recent improvement by a solid display. There was not a great deal of combination in the Hokitika side, but there were a number of good indivi--dual performances, notably those of L. Beban and R. Neilson in the backs. A. Gillman also played well in the forwards until he was injured towards the end of the game. Other imjpressive Hokitika players were K. 'Moseley and Atkinson (both for- • wards). I The Marist backline did not func'tion as well as usual, but it was seriously handicapped by the fact that Hokitika got the lion’s share of the I ball from the set scrums. A. Hines, J. : Curnow and L. Dargan were probably I the most effective backs. J. Calder land P. Costello were the leaders of i the Marist pack. Mundy retired with la serious arm injury early in the I game. ! The first point in the game came .when M. Teen scored for Marist, but ;the try was not converted. Later in . the first spell, J. Curnow kicked a neat field goal. No other points were scored, the final, score being, Marist 5, Hokitika nil. Mi - R. Baird was referee. First Defeat Of Champion Reserve Grade Team Exciting football, of a good standard, was seen in the curtain-raiser at Wingham Park, when Marist senior reserves inflicted the first defeat of the season on the Brunner team, which has previously kept its line intact. Marist won by 16 points to 12, tries being scored for the winners by 'J. Knapp (3) and P. Costello. T. Dunn ; converted one and also kicked a goal from a penalty. For Brunner W. Erskine and Lee scored tries, Erskine converted both and also kicked a goal from a penalty, bringing his total tally of points in club football this season to 113, well in excess of any tenior player’s record. SEVENTH GRADE FINAL By defeating Brunner by 18 points to nil on Saturday, Marist A won the seventh grade championship, which was closely contested. Marist’s ponts were made up of six unconverted tries, scored by K. Campbell, A. Kennedy, K. Walker, A, O’Neill, K. King and A. Furness.
