RUGBY LEAGUE OPENING OF NEW SEASON TO BE HELD ON APRIL 4

The Board of Control of the West Coast Rugby League decided at its meeting last night to open the season on Sunday April 4. Nominations of teams are to be forwarded to the secretary by Tuesday, March 23. The following committees were elected for the new season:—Finance, president, secretary and treasurer; grounds, Messrs J’. Kidd, W. Meates, C. McDonald; postponement, Messrs B. Ramsay, R. Armstrong, J. Oakley; fixtures statistician; Mr Kidd; publicity, Messrs Connors and McKenzie; emergency, Messrs Ramsay, Meates, McKenzie and Kidd; custodian. Mr C. K. Morel.

It was decided that, when necessary, the postponement committee should meet at 10.45 a.m. to enable an announcement to be made at a pre-arranged time, probably 11 a.m. The Greymouth branch of the New Zealand Cyclist’s, Axemen’s and Athletic Union was granted the use of Victoria Park on April 3 for a sports meeting. It was also decided to advise the West Coast Rugby Union that the park was under the control of the league from April 1 to September - 30 and to seek the union’s co-operation in arranging times for the ground to be made available for training. The Rapahoe club’s balance sheet for the past season, showing a credit of £25 9s 9d was received as satisfactory. The secretary reported that there was still considerable work to be done at Wingham Park before the opening of the season and he was empowered to make inquiries for a simpler method of cutting the lines. Stating that there were only 16 referees available for all matches, Mr R. Armstrong (referees’ delegate) urged that clubs should make special efforts to secure more referees. _ He said that there were 11 qualified referees in Greymouth, four in Blackball and one in Runanga. In the other districts there were none. It was decided to discuss the situation at the delegates’ meeting to be held next week to receive the revised constitution of the league. The West Coast delegates to the New Zealand Council (Mr W. Swift) advised that high tributes had been paid to Mr L. Hunter, of Runanga, one of the joint managers of the Kiwi team. Mr J. A. Redwood, president of the New Zealand League had stated that Mr Hunter had at all times filled his post with ability and dignity and had been an asset on the tour. , X 1 .. Mr Kidd, chairman of the committee, reported on the success of the ball which was held to welcome the West Coast members of the touring tefltm. ___________™—-.
