HOKITIKA TENDERS TO BE CALLED FOR NEW FIRE STATION

The Hokitika Fire Board, at its quarterly meeting, decided to instruct its architect to call tenders for the construction of a new fire station, in accordance with plans submitted, rhe board also decided to offer for sale by tender, the fire station situated on Gibson’s quay. „ , ~, . The tender of St. Mary’s Church, Hokitika, was accepted for the fire bell from No. 1 station. The board tendered its congratulation to Superintendent L. L. Ross on being elected President of the United Fire Brigades’ Association. The chairman said it was an honour to the brigade, the board and the town. Reference was also made to the death of Fireman J. J. Mclntosh and a motion of sympathy with the relatives was carried. Some discussion took place on the fire escapes at the Princess Theatre, after Mr A. Rooney had suggested that the back seats required a better outlet to the escapes. The secretary said that the superintendent of the brigade had placed certain recommendations before the Borough Council which, in the meantime, had granted only a temporary licence to the theatre. The manager of the theatre was awaiting instructions as to the requirements. The annual meeting of the board was held subsequently, Mr M. D. Bowman being re-elected chairman. It was decided to place £lOO to the capital expenditure fund, the treasurer’s statement showing a credit balance of £197 13s 6d. RUGBY FOOTBALL Forty-five members attended the annual meeting of the St Mary’s Rugby Football Club, when the following officers were elected: —Patron, Rev. Father D. Lordan; president, Mr R. Quinn; vice-president, Mr E. J. Allan; secretary-treasurer, Mr P. Brown; assistant secretary, Mr G. Creagh; club-captain, Mr M. Davidson; committee, Messrs J. Minehan, M Dwan, R. Breeze, R. Little, N. Nutting, J. Davidson, D. Diedrich, F. Gkoufsky, P. McNamara; delegates to sub-union, Messrs F. Groufsky, T. Hanrahan. Senior team manager, Mr T. Haddock; junior, Mr C. Henderson. The following committee was appointed to investigate the possibilities of school teams: Messrs J. Davidson, E. J. Allan, M. Davidson, J. Henderson. It was decided to enter a senior team in the South Island Catholic football clubs’ Easter competition at Christchurch. The following new members were elected: C. Nolan, H. Stickles, P. McNamara, G. Stopforth, C. Ross, P. Stephens. J. Kirwan, G. Wovmington, A. Aitken... ■
