ATHLETICS GREY CLUB’S POINTS CONTEST REACHES CONCLUDING STAGES
With only the points for the events on next Tuesday evening’s programme to be included, the Greymouth Amateur Athletic Club’s points competition has reached an interesting stage. In several cases athletes have reached unbeatable positions, but in others the leaders are separated by small margins. . T. Harker is at present leading in both the senior sprints and field points, competitions, but his margin is slight and, as he is at present absent from the district, he may be replaced in the leadership of both on Tuesday. W. Curragh and J. Knapp are equal second, three and a-nalf points behind Harker in the sprints, and V. Hahn is only one point behind in the field events. A substantial lead held by the Otago distance runner, L. Black, was severely whittled down after his return to Dunedin a month ago, by T. Cameron, who in many races was the only competitor. A win in the mile race last Tuesday night gave Cameron the lead and certain victory in the competition.
G. Smith is certain to win the junior sprint competition, but W. Kelly (394) and A. Batey (36) will dispute the second place. For the second year in succession H. Hill will be an easy winner in the junior field events, having so far . secured 274 points to the second man’s 15. Over the past. few. weeks an interesting struggle developed between G. Watson (last year’s winner) and P. Guerin for the major honours in the distance events, but Guerin won the mile on Tuesday to clinch his lead and now has 30 points to Watson’s 26. M. Avery has run consistently in the women’s sprints and is assured of victory with 48 points. Miss P. Crooks is second so far with 39 points, but the hurdler, Miss Cleghorn, with 38, has still a chance. Mrs D. J. Perrin, for the second successive term, has won the field aggregate with 31 points, three and a-half ahead of Mrs M. Nelson.
