DARK MARNE WINS DOOMBEN CUP IN RECORD TIME
BRISBANE, July 20, Dark Marne, the winner of the Doomben Cup yesterday, was sold by Mr F. W. Hughes, the Sydney breeder and owner, for 110 guineas, and only three months ago was beaten i,n a two-horse race at Wyong for a stake of only £39. Hiraji, for which Mr Hughes paid 2000 guineas in New Zealand a year ago, was well beaten by Dark Marne, though he ran his best race' yet. The winner started badly, but was well handled by his jockey, G. Podmore, and ran .into a position .halfway from the leaders. Felt Force, which holds the Australian record for nine furlongs, dashed to the front and stayed there to the turn into the straight. There Hiraji started his run which took him to the front. Dark Marne challenged strongly and the two horses fought out the finish. The former New Zealander, Immediate, ran into trouble at the seven furlongs, losing much ground but he made up lengths in the straight to finish sixth. The Melbourne jockey, A. Breasley was hooted by the crowd when the hot favourite, Attley, finished third in the Doomben Flying Handicap. Left four lengths at the barrier, Attley carried his load like a great racehorse and was one of the best things Bris-. bane has seen beaten for years. Results:— j Flying Handicap. Of £lOOO.
