SPORTING Royal W rit, Longsword And Panope Win The Main Events At Trentham

L*' “ ■ - v # Approaching the stand double the second time Abdicate, The Dozer, Spanish Main and Northfield were almost in line in front and Royal Writ, Red Glare and Royal Scholar were at the head of the rest, which were fairly well bunched. The Dozer ran off at the next fence, where Abdicate was clear of Northfield, Red Glare, and Spanish Main. Down the back Northfield and Royal Scholar improved, and they took over the lead from Abdicate at the five furlangs, where Red Glare had a life. Royal Scholar took the lead at the four furlongs, and round the home turn Northfield began to tire, and Royal Writ took second place, with

Roman Ned and Good Armour next. Royal Writ headed Royal Scholar jnlo the last fence, and once over it drew away to beat him home by five lengths, with two lengths to the fastfinishing Good Armour, which beat Roman Ned for third. Then came Northfield, clear of Town Survey, with gaps to -Red Glare, Abdicate. Spanish Main, and Roman Son. The Parliamentary Handicap showed that the six-year-old Lang Eian gelding, Longsword, is still a force to be reckoned with in big handicaps. Taking the lead at the furlong, he galloped on strongly to win decisively from Valley Boy, with Robin’s Reward, which was badly placed orf the rails for most of the journey, a good third. Although Longsword won decisively, Valley Boy put up a phenomenal performance to run second, as he was badly interfered with by Lord Darnley during the running, and almost fell. He made a splendid recovery and finished brilliantly. Round the home

turn the chances of Chung Chong, Robin’s Reward, and Valley Boy did not look bright, and Longsword worked forward *to trail Pensacola and Alamode into the straight, with Fortune’s Smile and Precedency heading the others. As the field straightened up, Alamode momentarily took the lead, but Longsword took charge commencing the final furlong, with Robin’s Reward, Honora, and Valley Boy becoming prominent. Longsword finished on solidly, and though Valley Boy finished brilliantly, he had no chance of catching the winner. , Robin’s Reward also came home solidly for third, with Honora close up fourth. There was a gap to Pre- •

cedency, which was followed by Ganges, Foxchase,* Alamode, Welcome Guest, and Chung Chong. Panope’s Strong Finish Panope finished strongly over the last half furlong to win the Members’ Handicap and secure her first success for the season. Gay Chat ran on well for second, but the unlucky horse was Citation, which after losing a dozen lengths at the start, got up for third. Psalm, Tiger Tan, Playtos, and Po Marama were first out, and Psalm and Playtos led down to the half-mile from Lady Delight, Po Marama, Panope, Neenah, Master Ted, and Citation, which moved up fast, The two leaders held their position round to the straight entrance from Po Marama, Neenah, Prince Revel, and Panope. The latter moved up quickly to take charge when the leaders commenced to weaken at the furlong, where Citation and Gay Chat were becoming prominent. Panope held on to the lead to win by a length and a half from Gay Chat, which beat Citation by half a length. Master Ted was fourth, then came Prince Revel, Playtos, and Psalm in line Po Marama, Verdant, Lady Chips, Neenah, Frances, and Swift Fox, which was bracketed with the winner, and accounted for the strong support for the bracket.

Won Easily Allowed to pursue his usual pacemaking tactics, Bay Robe worked clear of Shepherd’s Mate with just over a mile to run in the Lambton Hurdles at Trentham on Saturday, and from that stage he had no difficulty in holding his lead from Foxstar, which was giving Bay Robe from 15 to 20 lengths with a mile to run. Whirlwind Star was a poor third. Bay Robe was going freely round to the straight entrance, and was three lengths clear of Whirlwind Star, with two to Rink dropping back, followed by Foxstar and Glad Fox two lengths clear of Lost Art. Once ' they were over the last hurdle it was left to Foxstar to give chase to Bay Robe, but it was a hopeless task and the latter was two lengths clear passing the post. The tiring Whirlwind Star was another four lengths away third, with three lengths to Sporting Gold in fourth place. Glad Fox and Waiting were next, with a big gap to Rink and Lost Art. Easiest of the Day

Special Flight, a daughter of that wonderful winner-producing mare, Francolin, the darn of Royal Flight, Bonny Flight, and many other winners, maintained the family reputation when she scored one of the easiest wins of the day in the Seatoun Hack Handicap. Her effort was an impressive one as she was slow away. However, as soon as she had found her feet A. E. Didham moved her up smartly to join Tommy Gun m second place. She held her position round to the straight, where she auickly had the measure of the leader, Mote ton Bay. and outclassed . the field in the run home. Moreton Bay soon rah through to the ledd and nt the half-mile was followed by Tommy Gun and Speeia Flight with Find OUt, Morotai, and Neville next. There was no Change intoUk straight, where Special Flight quickly challenged Moreton Bay, and in a few strides took the lead, the others no chance over the final furlong. Tommy Gun headed the others at the distance, but was stronglv challenged by Morotai m the i last half-furlong, the latter beating

[SPECIAL TO STAR] ■ WELLINGTON, This Day. Royal Writ, an aged gelding by Solicitor-General from Princess Doreen, owned by Mr F. Riders Suspended at Trentham • The inquiry ihto the accident in the Whyte Handicap on the first day of the Wellington Racing Club’s meeting, when 11 horses fell, was concluded on Saturday and N. B. Holland, the rider of Citation, was found guilty of careless riding and causing interference to Howe, and the judicial stewards suspended him for one month. B. Boreham, the rider of Lord Darnley in the Parliamentary Handicap, was found guilty of causing interference to Chung Chong and Valley Boy, and he was also suspended for one month. The inquiry into the running of Mercian Lad in the Te Aro Hack Handicap on the first day was also completed. The owner, Mr H. Salway, the trainer, J. G. Farrell, and the rider, W.
