HIGH CLASS BLOOMS

ST. PATRICK’S FLOWER SHOW ’ OPENS GLADIOLI AND DAHLIAS The St. Patrick’s Horticultural Society’s third summer show opened this -afternoon at Columba Hall '.and . ■some splendid blooms were on display. The entries were good, •particularly in the gladiolus section which -•was the -.best' -yet staged by the ' society. The premier bloom in the .gladiolus open .section was exhibited -by Messrs C*. and H. Jackson with “Miss :New Zealand,” which was also adjudged champion of champions. This bloom is an outstanding pink, with 10 spikes fully out and 16 showing colour. The exhibitors also won the, McDonnell Challenge Cup for the; best 12 in the class and the Hassall' Challenge Cup for the best six. Messrs Jackson obtained .first and second prizes in every section of the open class. - ' In the amateur section, some .excellent blooms were entered and the points .were very close. The .premier, bloom was exhibited by the Rev. ’E. Q. Harding. Named “Rosea,” -the, prize bloom.showed eight-spikes fully out with 15 showing colour. Mr Harding, .also won the McCarthy. Challenge Cup for-.the best six in the section. Mrs T. McLean, of Cobden, was runner-up and blooms exhibited by Messrs B. Watkin and J. Fletcher, all of Cobden, were close behind. Mr J. J. Wood exhibited the premier bloom in the open dahlia section, and took all other prizes in the section. The premier bloom, “Wenooka” was rosy-mauve in colour. There was an outstanding bloom in the amateur section, “Plus 11,” which won the first prize for Mrs J. Barrow. This was a mediumdecorative bloom, coloured lemon with white-tipped petals. The decorative section included a number of high-class entries leading exhibitors were Mrs Kear, Miss Prendergast, Mrs Barrow and Miss Cunliffe. The cut-flowers and vegetable section also attracted large entries, while a feature of the show was the number of outstanding blooms on display in the children’s sections.
