Chief Racecourse Inspector
Mr. A. E. Ward To Retire Shortly (P.A.) WELLINGTON, February 5. The chief racecourse inspector for the New Zealand Racing Conference, Mr. A. E. Ward, is to retire on March 31. Mr. Ward, who joined the conference staff in November, 1921, had a distinguished record in the police force before taking up his present position. Joining the Department of Justice in 1898, Mr. Ward was stationed in Dunedin, Christchurch, Hawke’s-. Bay and Wanganui-New Plymouth areas. He gained special promotion in .1905 for the arrest of an armed man. He was appointed detective-sergeant in 1913 and chief detective in charge of the detective branch at Wellington in 1920. Several times during his career in the force Mr. Ward received special commendation from the bench. In 1910 he received the Silver Medal of the Royal Humane Society for saving a boy’s life at Dunedin and in 1912 was awarded the Police Department’s long-service and gold conduct medal. The work of Mr. Ward and his staff during his 26 years with the Racing Conference has done much to keep the undesirable element off racecourses. All phases of racing administration, licensing and control came with the scope of his duties. Acceptors For Wanganui Meeting (P.A.) WANGANUI, Feb. 4.
