HOKITIKA NEW AERODROME

' COUNCIL TO MAKE LAND AVAILABLE (C.C.) HOKITIKA, Sept. 18. The Hokitika Borough Council will make available to the Crown, free of cost, five sections,, of a total capital value of £145, and unformed streets required for the proposed new aerodrome at Seaview. This was decided at the monthly meeting of the council when the resident engineer, Public Works Department, wrote stating that the council was the registered owner of a number of sections of land required for the aerodrome, as well as a number of un " formed streets. None of the land or streets had been in any way developed and the engineer requested the council to make such land available free of cost, to the Crown, as it was necessary for the purpose of t.ie aerodrome anci access roads. Tne request for the donation of the land emanated from the Treasury, as the aerodrome would be a decided asset to the borough.Present at the meeting were, the Mayor, Mr A. R. Elcock, Crs. C. Caliari, S. G. Roberts, I. J. Preston, A. C .Armstrong, W. H. Stopforth, H. C. Peart, S. G. Havill.and L. S. Ross. Messrs Learmont and Thorn, surveyors, advised that the final line for the proposed new pipe line from Lake Kanieri had now been fixed on the ground, with the exception of 20 chains below Ward road where minor alterations would improve the alignment, but this could be done at any time. In the surveyors’ opinion the route chosen was the best possible, but before pegging it would be necessary to have the engineer s approval.’ It as decided that the engineer make an inspection, as requested by the surveyors. The District Employment Officei advised that the authority authorising the employment of three married men on a subsidy basis of £4/17/3 per man per week, and one married man on a subsidy basis of £6/2/3 a week had been extended for a furthei period of 13 weeks. It was decided that the V orks Committee inspect the sections ot Tancred street between Hamilton and Stafford streets, with a view to re-surfacing and sealing this sumiTior. An application from the Westland Racing Club for the use of Cass square on Boxing Day, for the purpose of holding a sports meeting, was granted. It was decided to write to the Minister of Railways, asking when Railway street would be tar-sealec. as he had promised. The Hokitika Beautifying Association advised that it would conduct a clean-up week between October 5 and 12 and requested that the council should make a house-to-house rubbish collection during that week. The association also thanked the council for its offer to give reasonable financial assistance in the antilitter campaign. A sub-committee was appointed to confer with the association, with power to act.
