MACHINERY SALE

KEEN DEMAND FOR ELECTRIC EQUIPMENT GILLESPIE’S BEACH PLANT Almost every industry on the West Coast was represented in over 150 prospective buyers who attended the auction sale at Greymouth this morning of the plant of the Gillespie’s Beach dredge, which included a large amount of electrical equipment. ■ ' The demand for electric motors was keen, but prices varied considerably, the smaller units bringing higher prices, comparatively, than the heavier motors. The mining industry absorbed a number of the lots in this section. On an average, the prices were about two-thirds of the new values of the mdtors, on 1937 levels. Some of the sales were: 60 h.p. motor, £220; 55 h.p., £75; 50 h.p., £9O; 40 h.p, £7O; 25 h.p, £6O and £4O; 71 h.p. £l6 and £10; 3 h.p, £18; 1- h.p. £8 10/- and £lO. Bidding was also brisk for electrical sundries, a welding plant realising £26, and a portable electric drill £l7 10/-. Some classes in this section were much cheaper than existing new values and the buyers included local authorities, sawmillers and garage proprietors. Interest was also taken in a large quantity of engineering accessories, but again there was a wide difference in values, depending upon the size of the lots and the availability of new goods. Some lines which are in short supply realised values comparable with new prices, but in other cases bargains were secured.
