HOKITIKA MOUNTAINEERS’ PROPOSAL FOR MEMORIAL HUT
There was a small attendance at the monthly meeting of the Canterbury Mountaineering Club’s Westland branch. The secretary read the notes that were to be published m the club’s journal, the Mountaineer. Activities since the revival of the local branch had been trips to the Carrington Camp, Mathias Pass region, “Three Pass” Route, and Toarcha Springs, it was stated. The secretary reported that he had conierred with coimiTittee members at Christchurch and that more photo slides were being sent to Hokitika shortly. The Christchurch members liad proposed a combined outing at Lake Brunner or some other point accessible from both clubs home towns, to take place early in the summer. Mention was made that all new huts erected by the parent club were memorials to member's, and a suggestion was made that either the Arthur’s Pass hut or some other main base hut erected in the future should be declared a war memorial hut, and the appropriate inscriptions be incorporated in it. Four past membeis of the Westland branch had lost their lives on activd service, and tbme must be many more who belonged to the club and who were worthy ol some permanent memorial. It was resolved to forward the suggestion to the club’s headquarters secretary. Proposed trips were discussed and it was decided to hold an outing either for a day at Mt. Tuhua or a week-end a.t Toaroha Springs as soon as transport could be arranged.
