WESTPORT DISTRICT MILK SUPPLY AGAIN DISCUSSED

The need for an organisation in-the Buller district to grant licences for the sale of milk and to see that a satisfactory state of affairs existed between the producer and the vendor was explained in a letter received from the Milk Marketing Division at a meeting of the Buller County Council this week.

The division proposed that the council should be the milk licensing authority for the district. It was stated by members that’ the subject had been brought up before but the Borough Council had rejected the scheme. This, however, did not mean that the county council should take the. same attitude. Councillors considered that the matter should be gone into more fully, and for this purpose appointed the chairman (Mr. J. Ward), CT. M. Durkin, and the clerk-engineer (Mr. C. F. Schadick) as a committee to submit a report on the Milk Marketing Division’s proposal. INCREASED BAR DEPTH There was a substantial increase in the depth of water on the Buller river bar when soundings were taken on Tuesday, there being 13 feet 6 inches at low time, giving approximately 25 feet at high water. Shipping outwards from, the port has been able to take full loads of coal and as a result the stocks available were considerably reduced by the Kai;tigi,.and Kakapo loading., for Auckland. The Rata, which arrived on Tuesday evening, did not commence loading until yesterday, when tiie class of coal required for shipment; was received from the mines. Stocks will be built up in the meantime to await the arrival this week of the Wingatui, which will load for Wellington, and the Kaimiro, which will load for Auckland. FAREWELL TO INSPECTOR

At a large and representative gathering of teachers from the Buller district and members of the Nelson Education Board, tribute was paid to the work of Mr. C. A. Cumming, ,M.A„ senior inspector of schools, who has received notice of transfer to Taranaki. The guest was entertained at supper and musical items were presented by Misses D. Smallholme, P. Methven, Messrs R. Boys and A. Mclntyre. FISH PLENTIFUL. Westport fishermen struck / big schools of groper in the roadstead on Wednesday, one launch bringing ffi'so big fish, while the total catch was estimated at more than 29001 b.
