P.&T. TRAINING SCHEME
PLANS FOR RETURNING MEN Details of a scheme to assist servicemen returning to the employ of the Post and Telegraph Department were given by the Chief Postmaster at Greymouth, Mr F. Mairs, this' morning. There are still large numbers of men to return, he said, and in order to have a scheme of training fully developed the Department had adopted a programme of tuition and refresher courses. Tuition Avould be given men who had been promoted in the Department while on active service, and the refresher courses would be for those who had experience prior to joining the Forces, but who, owing to developments during their absence, had found it necessary to acquire new knowledge. Men with previous experience, said Mr Mairs, would be given a reasonable period of Avork Avith other employees z in order that they might observe the methods employed. They would then be placed in less busy sections, and as they gain experience would be transferred to the busier sections according to the progress they made. Those with no knowledge of the particular work on Avhich they were engaged on resumption Avould be given special consideration. The process of learning was being made as simple and interesting as possible, and due consideration would be given to special qualifications of officers and the type of work they were doing. “When sufficient officers are available,” continued the Chief Postmaster, “it is hoped to establish classes Avith tutors in the various branches in order that group tuition may be given. It has already begn found that under this scheme, the returned men are happy and willing to rehabilitate themselves quietly into their former occupations.”
