GREY FIRE BOARD

QUARTERLY MEETING

The quarterly meeting of the Greymouth Fire Board, held yesterday afternoon, was of short duration, there being a brief agenda. Mr. W. H. Parfitt presided, also present being Messrs G. R. Harker, N. D. Bowman and W. E. Olds. „ + , The financial statement indicated a credit balance of £273/0/7. The District Public Trustee advised that he had agreed to act as Commissioner of the Board’s Capital Expenditure Fund. The Minister of Internal Affairs consented to the establishment of the fund. In response to a communication from the Brigade relative to the noncalling of members on two recent occasions, the Chief Postmaster (Mr. M. R. Aldridge) stated that inquiry had revealed that two lines were not operating satisfactorily at the time. While his Department was.prepared to assist as far as possible, full responsibility could not be accepted for the calling of an extensive list of Fire Brigade members. Mr. Parfitt reported on the conference of Fire Boards held recently in Wellington. On the suggestion of Mr. Parfitt it was decided to present diplomas to each of the 38 auxiliary firemen who had trained under the E.P.S. scheme for about three years. Superintendent A. White reported that since the July meeting there had been three fires, one causing no damage and two slight damage. He thought the siren, would give good service in place of the bell. The 300 ft., of hose on order had arrived and was of lower grade than that previously supplied. The musters and practices had been well attended. Superintendent White reported with regret the death of the Caretaker, Ex-Fireman T. Dumbleton, on September 3. He had been popular with the Brigade and thoroughly versed in his duties. Being a Gold Star man, he had been accorded a fireman’s funeral. The Board passed a resolution 1 of sympathy with the relations of the late Mr. Dumbleton. The Board decided to apply for a caretaker, duties to commence at the end of January. It was decided to make a grant of £45 towards the cost of procuring 12 uniforms for the Cobden Brigade, the Brigade members supplying a similar amount. , The Chairman conveyed the compliments of the season to members of the Board and Brigade. NEW STATION FOR HOKITIKA. Authority has been received from the Building Controller for the ereclion of a new fire station at Hokitika. This information was given at a recent meeting of the Hokitika Fire Board. _ , ~ , , It was agreed that £l5 be voted towards the expenses of the West Coast fire brigades’ demonstation to be held at Hokitika on November 25. . It was reported that Mr. G. Lakin, secretary of the Hokitika Fire Brigade, had been a patient in hospital for the last four months. The secretary was asked to convey, to aim the board’s best wishes for a quick recovery. __________
