WEEK-END ACCIDENTS

MAN DROWNED.

[PER PRESS ASSOCIATION.]

CHRISTCHURCH, August 18. William Free, aged 37, married, with three children, of 34 Glade Avenue, Richmond, was drowned when he fell off the New Brighton Pier about 5 p.m. to-day. The body was recovered near the New Brighton Memorial Hall about 10 p.m. Free was standing on the pier with his wife. When he fell into the water a soldier, Private Stanley Orr, of the Third Echelon, who was standing on the pier, threw a wooden seat and a lifebelt into the water and dived in. He tried unsuccessfully to rescue Free, who .soon disappeared. An attempt to find him was also made by Messrs Ross McKenzie and Warren Hart, who entered the water from the beach, and swam out well beyond the pier. They at first thought that it was Private Orr who was in danger, but he directed them towards where Free had fallen in. Their attempt, however, was unsuccessful.
