[PEB PBESB ASSOCIATION.] SHEARER? WAGES. WELLINGTON, November 21. The secretary of the New Zealand Farmers’ Union has received a letter from Mr. Nash, confirming the undertaking already given by the Government in Parliament, that immediate remittance permits will be granted to Australian shearers,, in respect of wages earned in New Zealand. INTOXICATED DRIVER AUCKLAND, November 20. "Drivers should now know what to expect if they will not refrain from indulgence in liquor,” remarked Mr. W. R. McKean, S.M., in the Otahuhu Magistrate’s Court, when John Valentine Proctor, 24, described as a labourer and showman, pleaded guilty to a charge of being intoxicated while in charge of a motor-car on NovemberJ 1 at Otahuhu.. Accused was sentenced to 14 days’ imprisonment. His license I was ordered to be withdrawn for 12. months, and he was ordered to ,pay medical expenses. SEARCH FOR OIL. AUCKLAND, November 21. “We are carrying out exploration work for oil,” said Messrs R. E. Turner -and E. V. Winterer, American geologists attached to the staff of the i Superior Oil Company of New Zealand, on their arrival at Auckland, accompanied by Mr J. W. Ward, a Wellington solicitor, after visiting Australia. They said they were unable to comment on their business. Mr Winterer said it was likely he would return to the United States by the next ship. “The Company, whose headquarters are at Palmerston North, employs 38 men, 23 of whom are Americans,” said Mr Turner, He added that the company had 14 permits, each covering 200 square miles of territory in the North and South Islands. They will leave for Palmerston North by car, to-day.

WATERSIDER’S OFFENCES. AUCKLAND, November 21. Arrested after his car had backed into another car in Crummer Road, on the evening of November 9, William George McLoughlin, watersider, 31, pleaded guilty in the Police Court, to-day, to intoxication while in charge of a car. He also pleaded guilty to being in possession of an unregistered revolver, which he said had been found among his deceased mother’s effects, and intended throwing it in the harbour.

,Accused’s counsel said that at the time of the accident, the car had run out of petrol, and accused was backing it down an incline, when it hit the other car.

The police said that accused was fined £lO in .1937, on an intoxicationcharge. Mr. McKean, S.M., passed sentence of 21 days’ imprisonment on the intoxication charge, and cancelled accused’s license for two years. For having the revolver, accused was fined £2, and. for being in possession of an unregistered firearm, 10/-. The revolver was ordered to be forfeited.
