FIFTY MILES CHAMPIONSHIP. [PER PRESS ASSOCIATION.] DUNEDIN, September 4. W. Willmott (Timaru) 1 won the New Zealand 50 miles professional cycling championship from the scratch marl: in the annual fixture conducted by The Green Island Cycling Club on 'Saturday afternoon. He beat L. Fleming (Christchurch)’ by two lengths in the good time of 2hr 12mih 56sec., the fastest yet recorded. A. Woodford (Dunedin)’ was third. AKATARAWA RACE. WELLINGTON, September 4. The worst possible weather and road conditions on Saturday made the Poneke Cycling Club’s Akatarawa open race the most strenous of the series of annual open events in the history of the club. The distance was 73 miles, and in spite of many punctures the scratch men made fast times. G. Arney (Port Nicholson) had the distinction of carrying off both first place and fastest time. The field cf 28 included representatives of all the Wellington clubs, as well as Auckland and Feilding. N. Scrimgeour (26min), of was second, D. Evans' (3Smin.) .?f Poneke, was third, and R. Evans (38min.) of Poneke, was fourth. Only half the field finished.
