AUSTRALIAN RACING GOLD ROD DEFEATS STRETTO SYDNEY, September 4. Sunday newspapers feature a mixup in the barrier in the Canterbury Guineas yesterday. They describe it as a sensational bungle, originated by somebody tampering with the tapes. It is reported that boys climbed the fence and tied the starting level to a nut, rendering it impossible for the tapes to lift and when the starter cried out “go,” three horses were caught in the tapes. Rathlin’s rider, F. Lewis, was pulled off and E. Bartie suffered facial injuries. Pandava, with McCarten, bolted under the tapes and went a mile before McCarten, - hearing the crowd’s shouts, realised it had been a false start. The riderless Rathlin galloped behind, but was finally pulled up and began to feed on grass on the track. McCarten declared that Pandava was certainly not improved by the false start and a useless gallop. Results: — Canterbury Guineas. Nine furlongs. Rt*Spirator 8.5 (E. Bartie) 1; Aeolus, 2; Petruchio 3. All started. Respirator was badly away and tailed the field to the turn, where he was badly interfered with. There is a possibility that he will be reserved for weight-for-age events. POSITION OF RACING. MR ' PARRY’S STATEMENT. ROTORUA, September 5. ‘‘The present position of racing from its different standpoints in New Zealand,” stated Hon. W. E. Parry, “does not call for any pessimistic note. The various) racing clubs, in line with affairs generally in the Dominion to-day, have had, and are still enjoying, a buoyant time.” The Minister’s remarks were prompted by a recent opinion expressed by Dr. H. Bertram, President of the Rotorua Racing Club, that racing had reached its peak, and that there was a possibility of a decline setting in. “I think a better way to obtain an opinion on the position of racing today,” added the Minister, “is to invite individual clubs to report. I am sure there will be no pessimistic note struck.”
