In a Rugby League football match, Australia defeated Roanne. 20/13. At half-time, the score stood 11/5 in Australia’s favour.
The ground was covered with snow. The Kangaroos, early, were unwilling to go down on the hard ground, and shirked tackling, but later settled down, passed cleverly, and backed up consistently. They scored six tries, of which only one was converted.
SYDNEY, January 3.
Amiable equalled the weight-carry-’ ing record for a filly, in the Standish Handicap, sporting writers acclaiming her the best three-year-old sprintet since Waltzing Lily.
The “Herald’s” Melbourne correspondent says that no more consistent filly has been seen for a long time, she having scored four wins and been second and fourth in the last six starts.
WELLINGTON, January 3. J. McConchie, 102 Te Aro *Road, Wellington, was drowned at Evans Bay shortly after noon to-day, and his wife is in hospital with shock. They were fishing in the bay. A boy’s hat flew into the water. McConchie went in after it, and got into difficulties. The wife went to his aid, but he disappeared before she was able to reach him. The body has not been recovered.
