LEAGUE FOOTBALL

TRIAL GAME AT AUCKLAND. [per press association.] AUCKLAND, July 28. A trial game, played with a view tc assisting the selectors to choose tht New Zealand team to play the Australians early next month, did not prove of any great value, inasmuch that the ground conditions, which resembled a quagmire in places, did not permit players to do themselves justice. The game was also marred by injuries, Hemi and Kay, two prominent Auckland players, and Berry (Wellington) having to retire. Features of the game were the splendid play of Bickerton at fiveeighths, and Rata on the wing. The former made some good openings, and was easily the best of the inside backs. R. Chase, who scored three t ries, made a good impression. Among the southern players Davison (Canterbury), a wing-three-quarter, was the best back, and he should have good prospects of inclusion in the New Zealand side. He showed more speed than any other wing taking part in the match, and his goal-kick-ing was also a feature of the play. Kiely (West. Coast), a centre threequarter, did not receive many opportunities, but he played prominently in the second halt'. Glynn (West Coast) played a fine game in the forwards, being prominent, in the loose as well as performing excellently in tight play. Cootes (Wellington) ruined a promising display by holding on to the ball too long. The team will be chosen next Saturday evening, and the players will have a week’s training before meeting the Australians in the first test at Auckland' on Saturday week. INA NG AIII ’ A SU B-C ENT RE. [OUR own correspondent.] REEFTON. July 28. Last, evening a meeting of all delegates, from Rugby League clubs in the Inangahua. District, was held and the meeting was the largest since the inception of the code. The chairman of the Sub-Centre, Mr. C. Coxall, extended a hearty welcome to the twenty members present and outlined the business of the meeting. The secretary said that some reorganisation was necessary and suggested that the delegates discuss the matters on hand without any help from the Sub-Centre. Messrs. Scott and Chandler supported the suggestion, and accordingly the members of the Sub-Centre retired to allow the delegates’ meeting to proceed. On resumption, Mr. Scott, who had acted as 1 chairman of the delegates’ meeting, said that the delegates had had a full discussion and had arrived at the following decisions, all of which had been carried unanimously: (1) That this meeting of club delegates has every confidence in the present system of management and recommend that the present committee be retained. (2) That in the event of a club being unable to field a team on the Sunday, the secretary of that club should notify the secretary of the opposing club not later than 3 p.m. on the Saturday preceding the match. It was also recommended that the secretary of the Sub-Centre furnish all clubs with the names and addresses of all club secretaries. (3) That the fixtures in the Senior KnockOut Cup competition be replayed. The chairman stated that the Waiuta Club had sportingly offered to have all the matches replayed and as the Waiuta Club had virtually won the Cup, their action in asking for a. replay of the competition was very commendable. (4) That all junior matches be played oil Saturdays and the SubCentre’s action in reverting to Sunday football for the senior grade be endorsed. (5) That where it is necessary to play representative matches on the Saturday, the club fixtures be played on the Sunday. (6) That the suggestion for arranging for a. match between a senior reserve representative team and the team having the bye in the Greymouth competition on the Sunday that, the senior representative team is in Christchurch, be accepted. The chairman of the Sub-Centre, Mr. Coxall, expressed pleasure at the excellent result of the evening’s meeting, and said that. it. would give great heart to those working for the good of the game and that now the code was back on a sounder footing than before.

With the approval of the delegates, the following fixtures were drawn up for the replay of the Senior KnockOut one-round competition:—August 1: Waiuta v. Junction at Waiuta (F. Thorn); Waratahs v.
