FARMER STABBED
BACK-COUNTRY HAPPENING [per press association.] WANGANUI, July 28. A E. Davey, a well-known up-river settler, was found on his farm near Jerusalem, this morning-, suffering from a wound in the chest, all of the circumstances suggesting that he had been stabbed. The injured man lives inland from Jerusalem, and at this lime of the year his homestead is not. accessible bv motor vehicle. Doctor W. J. Feltham. of Raetihi, was called Io attend Davey. He motored to below Pipiriki, and completed the last part of the journey on horsehack. He found the patient suffering from a severe wound in the chest, and in such a condition that it would be dangerous to move him over the rough journey to the main road. Detective-Sergeant Robertson and Detective Murray, of Wanganui, motored to Jerusalem and rode the final lap on horses. They took possession of a knife, and interrogated those who knew of the happening. including Davey’s housekeeper. Davey’s condition late to-night was satisfactory.
Mr. A. E. Davey was a former resident. of Greymouth, having been on the Greymouth staff of the Bank of New South Wales some years ago.
