HOKITIKA NOTES
[OUB OWN CORRESPONDENT,] HOKITIKA, July 29. At. the fortnightly meeting of the All Saints’ Young Men’s Club, last evening, Mr. W. Eastgate, one of the contingent that, visited Britain for the Coronation, gave an interesting talk to the members, on his visit. He was accorded a vote of thanks by the members. of whom there were 15 present. The quarterly meeting of the Hokitika Fire Board was held last evening; present : Messrs. A. R. Elcock (chairman), W. C. Braddon, S. J. Preston, E. H. Box, F. S. Grant. The chairman welcomed Messrs. Box and Grant to the Board, these gentlemen duly responding. The Department of Internal Affairs wrote concerninfg the amalgamation of the Board and Borough Council. — The Borough considered that nothing would be gained by the proposed amalgamation, nor could the efficiency of the Brigade be improved. Messrs. Bowman and Williams wrote disapproving of the suggestion of amalgamation. The Hokitika Fire Brigade wrote asking for a supply of torches. The Secretary, Department of Internal Affairs, wrote stating that permanent employees should be paid wages ruling in similar positions elsewhere; also approving of estimates for ensuing year, and approving of the basic wage of £3/16/- to permanent, men. Also notifying the Board of the appointment of Mr. S. J. Preston as Government representative; Messrs. E. H. Box and F. S. Grant as underwriters’ representatives; and Messrs. W. C. Braddon and A. R. Elcock representing the Hokitika Borough Council.
The Oamaru Fire Board wrote enquiring the cost of fire alarms and particulars relating to installation of same.
The Hokitika Fire Brigade wrote advising the re-election of Mr. J. J. Mclntosh as Superintendent; Mr. C. L. Ross, deputy-superintendent, and Mr. G. Lakin as secretary, and asking approval of same. Authority was also sought, for the purchase of Honour Bars and medals, and some equipment, such as spanners and helmets. Accounts amounting to £lBB/19/8 were submitted and passed for payment.
The secretary reported receipts amounting to £174/4/10. The tell-tale clock showed no discrepancies for the quarter.
The estimates for the year, amounting to £590/10/- were approved. The Superintendent reported one fire, that at. the Mental Hospital: that, there were not standard appliances there' to cope with fires. It was resolved to write both hospitals on the subject.
