The Wellington society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, lias protested to the Government, through the Minister of Internal Affairs, against the shooting of live pigeons lat gun club trials. Attention is drawn to an advertisement recently seeking a thousand pigeons, which the Society says, all will be tame. Such a cruel sport should not bo permitted to continue.
LONDON, June 21. The Australian Associated Press understands the Shipping Committee discussions are now centred around the working conditions of crews on subsidised ships. New Zealand insists that the companies cannot expect a. Subsidy io be unaccompanied by some form of control. They must accept the New Zealand standard of fair treatment of labour, including matters of wages, hours, and working conditions. The New Zealand representatives do not insist on a Government representative on the directorate, though they believe it might be advantageous. They consider the final agreement should embody watertight clauses ensuring labour will receive a fair deal. Mr. Nash plans to leave early in July. An agreement may ue reached bv the eml of June,
