COBDEN SCHOOL

CHAIRMAN’S ANNUAL REPORT. The Chairman of the Cobden School Committee, Mr N. Hayes, will present the following report at the annual meeting of the Committee and householders, this evening:—“l wish to place before you the following report on the work of the Cobden School Committee during the past year. Finance:! am pleased to report that owing to an increased capitation allowance we were able to raise the salary of the caretaker during the year. An electric cleaner was also procured and is proving a valuable adjunct in keeping the school in a sanitary state. A substantial donation from the Cobden Home and School Association provided the means for the installation of twelve electric lights and five power points, costing £2l/10/-. The assistance of the Association was much appreciated in this matter.

“Minister’s Visit: The Minister of Education, Hon. P. Fraser, visited the school in January, and was much impressed by the work already carried out to the grounds, apd promised assistance to complete it. He also promised to give earnest consideration to our request for a grant for an extra class-room.

“Grounds: While the playing area is not all that could be desired, the Public Works Department are doing their best to complete the top-dress-ing, but have been hampered by bad weather. With the Spring weather, it is hoped that a good strike from the seed sown will convert the area into a more presentable sight.

“Visit of Board Members: In March three members of the Education Board paid an inspection visit to the school. They too, were favourably impressed with the various works being carried out. As a result of the visit, it is hoped that the school will shortly be connected with the Borough water supply.

“Thanks: Our thanks are 2due to the Canterbury Education Board for their ready and able assistance, to our local member, Mr H. J. Bignell, for his interest in our activities, to the Board’s local foreman, and to the headmaster and' staff tor their ready and valuable assistance.’”
