MR J. H. FOWLER APPOINTED

WELLINGTON, April 28

Tho appointment of Mr Janies Henry Fowler as Controller and' Audi-tor-General was announced by the Acting-Prime Minister (the Hon. P. Fraser) at the conclusion of a Cabinet meeting this evening. Mr Fowler, who has been Deputy-Controller and Auditor-General for the last 15 years, succeeds tho late Colonel G. F. C. Campbell. All Mr Fowler’s 'Government service has been in the Audit Department. He is the fifth occupant of the office to which he- has now been appointed, and possesses: the unique record of having served' under his four predecessors. That air audit officer has been appointed Controller and Auditor-General will give general satisfaction to the staff of the Department, for hitherto appointments to the position have been made from outside.

Born at Blenheim in 1878, Mt Fowler was educated at Blenheim school, where he won a Marlborough scholarship. This entitled him. to two years’ tuition at Nelson College, and while there he won another, which entitled him to remain at the college for a third year. After passing the junior and senior civil service examinations, Mr Fowler was appointed a cadet in the Audit Office in 1895. He remained' in the head office for seven years, and in 1902 went to Auckland, as Audit Inspector. He was engaged in this work for about 20 years, serving in almost all parts of New Zealand at various times during that period. In 1922 Mr Fowler was appointed chief clerk, chief audit inspector, and. DeputyController and Auditor-General. Mil Fowler lias been a member of the New Zealand' Society of Accountants since its formation about 1908. He is a vice-president of the Wellington Club, a position he has occupied for s-evcTal years.
