BARLEY INDUSTRY
ADVISORY COMMITTEE
[PEE I’BESS ASSOCIATION.]
WELLINGTON, April 28
The personnel of the barley advisory committee was announced tonight by the Minister for Agriculture (Hon. W. Lee Martin). The Minister recalled that in a statement made last November he expressed the desire of the Government to give effect to the proposals for an improvement in the barley industry, and indicated that an advisory committee would be set up to assist the Government in this direction. The personnel of the committee has now been decided as follows: —
Chairman: Mr R. B. Tennent, Department of Agriculture. Growers’ Representatives: Mr R. T. McMillan, Leeston. Mr H. H. Gifford, Blenheim.
Maltsters’ Representatives: Mr J. If. Hewlett, Christchurch. Mr A. B. ■Duncan, Christchurch. Mi- J. M. Smith, of .the Department of Agriculture, Dunedin, is also a member. “In making this announcement,” said Mr Martin. “I wish to make it perfectly clear that there is no intention~on the part of the Government of controlling the industry. The aim is rather that any improvements which may be effected will be brought about bv voluntary co-operation within the industry itself. Representation on the advisory committee of growers and maltsters should facilitate putting into operation improved practices, and I confidently anticipate that the work of the committee will be of outstanding value to the industry. The first meeting of the committee will be held at an early date.”
