JOURNALISM COMPETITION
AWARDS FOR 1936.
[PER press association.]
WELLINGTON, April 28.
Prizes in the 1936 competition in practical journalism were awarded' as follows by the ■ Council of _ the. New Zealand Journalists’ Association today:— First, Mr E. K. Green, Auckland “Star.” Second, Mr M. P. Whatman, Christchurch “Star-Sun,” and Mr F. C. Jones, Auckland “Star,” equal. Commended for good work in sports journalism, Mr T. A. Fleming, Christchurch “Star-Sun.”
Tho judges of the competition were Messrs J. H. Hall, M.A., formerly editor of the “Dominion,” Wellington, and Mr A. E. Mulgan, supervisor of broadcast talks for the National Broadcasting Service. Wellington. Mr Mulgan commented: “I am struck by the uniformly, high level of competency in writing. The English is sound, and tho style direct and effective. This confirms me in my impression that there is much less journalese and jargon and ‘fine writing’ in New Zealand journalism than there used to be. In my opinion no amount of brilliance in the few can compensate for lack in the many of the'qualities I have mentioned.”
Mr Hall commented: “There was little journalese this year.” He added suggestions for enlarging the scope of the, competition and for its future conduct. /
