HOKITIKA NOTES

[OUB OWN CORRESPONDENT, j Conveying over 500 passengers, from Greymouth, Ross and intermediate stations, the two special trains run by the Ross, Hokitika, Kumara Combined Railwaymen’s Picnic Committee, arrived at Lake Mahinapua on, Sunday where, Under ideal weather conditions, one of the most success-1 ful picnics of the season was l held. The children, were particularly well catered for in the free distribution of sweets, fruit, ice cream and toys. During the day members of the Greymouth Surf Club entertained the excursionists with a life-saving display, this event replacing the competition which was to have , been held between the , Greymouth and Hokitika Clubs. Owing to unforseen circumstances the latter team -was unable to be present. The Challenge Cup, presented by the Picnic Committee, was retained by the Greymouth Sulrf Club for the second year in succession. Under the baton of Mr C. Ross, twenty-five members of the Hokitika Band rendered an enjoyable programme dulring the day, adding much to the picnic atmosphere prevailing. The return trains' left Lake Mahinapua at. 5.30 and 5.32 p.m. for Greymouth and Ross respectively. The baby show, which was judged, by Mesdames A. C. Croft and W. 'A. Hardie resulted in the first prize in the six months and under section being won by the child of Mrs Sexton (Greymouth), and the second by Mrs Beckinsale’s infant (Awatuna). First in the twelve months and under by Barry, son of Mrs Cropper, Kaihinu, and second by Ronald, son of Mrs McArthur, Greymouth. Results of the adults races are as follow, placings being in the order shown, first and second respectively:—

Egg and Spoon Race: B. L. Kempton, T. Henderson. Youths’ Race: G. Davidson, W. J. Stackhouse. YoungLadies’ Race: Miss S. Kennedy, Miss A. Wallwork. Railwaymen’s Handicap: A. E. Parkinson, A. R. Alexander. Men’s 100 yards: D. Heinz, R. Kear. Three-legged race: Mr and Mrs East, F. Sexton and partner. Sack race, ladies: Mrs B. L. Kempton, Mrs S. Beckinsale. Sack Race, men’s: A. R. Alexander,. W. J. Stackhouse. Married Ladies’ Race: Mrs A. L. East, Mrs J. Burrows. Married Men’s Race: A. L. East, H. Staines. Railway Married Ladies’ Race: Mrs J. Burrowes, Mrs A. L. East. Railway Married Men’s Race: K. Alexander, W. G. Henderson. Men’s Race (over 40): W. G. Henderson, A. E. Parkinson. Cigarette Race: Mr and Mrs A. Alexander, Mrs Kempton and T. Henderson.
