“There has been pretty big business going on here, and it is looked on as one of the worst gambling dens in Auckland at the present time,” said Detective-Sergeant McHugh, when Sylvester Pickett, aged 33, labourer, one of three men arrested in a raid on the Reservoir billiards saloon, Great North road, on Saturday afternoon, appeared in the Magistrate’s Court on a charge of assisting in the management of a common gaming house. Detective-Sergeant McHugh added that numerous complaints had been received about the premises. Young men, most of them on sustenance, were being encouraged to go there, and a lot of drinking was going on. A number of empty bottles were found during the raid. Stating that he must take notice of the police report and accused's previous character, the magistrate said lie must be fined substantially. One month would be allowed to pay the fine of £5O, provided he reported twice weekly to Ihe police.
