“A SECOND SINGAPORE”

SOUTH AFRICAN SCHEME

TABLE BAY FORTIFICATIONS

[BY CABLE —PRESS ASSN. —COPYRIGHT.]

j (Recd. March 14, 10.20 a.m.). CAPE TOWN, March 12

A decision has been made intensively to fortify Robben Island, which is part of the scheme to make Table Bay a second Singapore. The heavy guns at Lion’s Head cannot be fired, as a full’ charge would blow the closelyinhabited sea-point to pieces. At Table Bay, works are being developed, to cost £10,000,000, to enable vessels of the heaviest tonnage to dock. It is believed that it is the intention of the Government to proceed with .a big equipment scheme, as the .result of which Table Bay will super'sede Simonstown as a naval port. Robben Island was formerly a leper settlement, and has since been unoccupied, except by lighthouse-keepers.
