TIMARU SHOP-LIFTERS

WOMAN IMPRISONED. [per press association.] TIMARU, August 8. In the Caswell theft case, the Magistrate said that Mrs. Caswell appeared to be the controlling spirit in the system of shoplifting. He ordered her to be detained for reformative detention for a period not exceeding 12 months on one charge of theft. On all the other charges she was convicted and discharged. Caswell was fined £5O on each of the two charges of receiving, to be paid within /seven days or in default four months’ imprisonment on each charge, the sentences to lie cumulative. At a subsequent sitting of the Court the Magistrate said it was open to question whether he had jurisdiction to impose a line exceeding £2O. He therefore reduced the line on each of the three charges regarding Caswell to that amount, the alternative to remain the same.
