HOCKEY
AUSTRALIANS v. HAWKE’S BAY’ [per press ASSOCIATION.] HASTINGS, September 13. Combination and fitness, especially the former, were responsible for the Australian hockey representatives defeating Hawke’s Bay, here, to-day by four goals to one in the presence of over a thousand people. The game was particularly fast throughout, and always interesting. The first spell was unexpectedly very even, the Bay more than holding their own. and showing surprising defensive ability. The spell was scoreless. After the change over, Bay attacked strongly in the first fifteen minutes to open the scoring, Fitzmaurice finding the nets. From this stage on, the Australians settled down to make effective use of their superior combination and team play. The score was quickly evened by Stenning, but it was some time before the home defence was again pierced, however, when it was about ten minutes before time the visitors scored three goals in quick time, scored by Penman (two) and Milner. Bay was tiring badly and feeling the effects of the early /ast play.
