RUGBY FOOTBALL

McLEAN CUP MATCH. To-morrow, at Rugby Park, the champion of champions match will take place between Excelsiors, winners of the Southern Division, and United, winners of the Greymouth competition, and, favoured with fine weather, a grand game should result. The contest will be for the McLean Cup, wflich was first played for last year, when, at Hdkitika, Cobden defeated Excelsiors. The United team are well known to local enthusiasts, and a repetition of their form in the last Blaketown match will probably land them home winners. Their rearguard will be strengthened by the inclusion, at first five-eighth, of J. Costello, formgr League rep., who will be having his first game of Rugby. Excelsiors, with such men as All Black R. King, Freitas, Davidson, M. Kelly, B. Kelly and the Hughes brothers, are a strong combination, particularly in the forwards, and they are confident of taking the Cup to Hokitika. Both teams have played fast, open football during the season, to win them their respective championships, and some sparkling Rugby should be witnessed to-morrow. On the No. 2 ground, at the Park, two senior trial teams will play, mainly with the idea of giving the representative players, not in the UnitedExcelsior match, a game before the tour. The players in the trial will assemble at the Park Hotel at 2 p.m., bringing their own gear. Curtain-raisers will be played on both grounds, the main attraction being the United-Celtic junior match.
