AUSTRALIAN FOURSOMES. (BY CABLE —PRESS ASSN. —COPYBIGHT.] SYDNEY, September 12. The holders of the Australian mixed foursomes title, J. Ferrier, of Manly, and Miss 0. Kay (New Zealand), began finely in that event to-day under ideal conditions at the Australian links, returning 77 for the first eighteen of 36 holes stroke play. They headed the field, being two strokes ahead of A. S. Deane and Miss Wray. W. McPherson and Miss Gaisford were sixth with 84. In the mixed foursomes handicap, eighteen holes, the winners were A. S. Deane and Miss Wray, with a handicap of six, and a net score of 73. Ferrier and Miss Kay (scratch) were fifth with a net score of 77. LATER. In the golf championship in the afternoon round, Jim Ferrier and Miss Kay, playing steadily, although missing some six and eight foot putts again led the field with 82, making their aggregate 159, which was eight better than their nearest opponent. They thus retained the championship. Miss Kay caused a sensation among the crowd at the eighth hole of 140 yards, when she went within one inch of holing out in one. McPherson and Miss Gaisford, in the afternoon, went round in 89, their aggregate being 173. Miss Gaisford showed signs of fatigue after her strenuous week’s golfing, but she relaxed when she realised the problem that she was up against.

PRESS TRIBUTES (Rec. September 13, 1 p.m.) SYDNEY, September 13. The foursomes championship scores were: Ferrier and Kay 77/82, total 159; Deane and Wray 79/87—166,■ G. Armstrong and Miss A. Chamley 83/84 —167, H. W. Hattersley and Miss V. Ebert (State champions) 82/85 —167. Commenting on the women’s final, the “Herald” says that it indicated the putter is the mightiest club in any golfer’s bag. The charming New Zealander Miss Gaisford was a “sweet loser,” as one enthusiast phrased it. She earned many friends by her skill and happy disposition. Referring to Mrs. Robinson’s departure for New Zealand as captain of the Tasman Cup team, the “Herald” says: New Zealanders are not likely quickly to forget the charming personality of the Australian associate chain, pion for 1934. Miss Kay and Miss Gaisford, as well as the Tasman Cup team will leave for New Zealand to-day.
