HOCKEY

♦ MAWHERA AGAIN DEFEATED. Two matches ‘were played yesterday, at Victoria Park in the men’s hockey competition, the surprise of the day being the victory of Technical over Mawhera. In the other competition match, Pacific defeated Cobden. The points in the Burnett White Cup competition, after yesterday’s matches are: Mawhera 9, Cobden 8, Pacific 8, St. Columba 7, Technical 3. The competition is at an interesting stage, and as Mawhera yet have to meet Cobden, and Pacific have yet to meet St. Columba and Technical, the • winning team is difficult to forecast. Pacific showed more combination among the forwards in their match with Cobden, and that factor contributed largely to their success. The backs of both sides played well. McLaughlin and Sequin scored for Pacific, and Eatwell for Cobden. Messrs. K. Balchin and W. Butler controlled the game. Technical played excellent hockey to defeat Mawhera by four goals to two, the forwards combining well in many snappy passing movements. Thomson (2), Kibble and Price scored goals for Technical and Fisher and Pascoe scored for Mawhera. Mr. G. Newton was referee. In a friendly match at the Park, Tahua, a newly-formed Hokitika Club, defeated St. Columba by four goals to two. Mr. G. Newton was referee. MANAWATU V. AUSTRALIANS. PALMERSTON NORTH, Sept. 12. In a game of fast open hockey, Manawatu defeated the Australian tourists by two to one.
