GREYMOUTH CLUB’S REPORT The report for the season 1933-34, of the Greymouth Lawn Tennis Club, to be presented at the annual meeting on Monday next, states: — The membership: Ladies 43 (decrease 9), gents 25 (decrease 19), juniors 2, honorary members 8. Subscriptions: Ladies £64/6/ (decrease £l3/9/-, gents £52/11/6 (decrease £36/13/6), juniors £2/2/-. Although subscriptions sho • a big decrease, the Club is in a fairly sound position financially. After meeting all liabilities we show a surplus of apr proximately £BO. It should be noted, however, that we shall incur rather heavy expenditure at the commencement of next season, and all the surplus will probably be absorbed in the building of retaining wall, re-painting pavilion, acquiring new nets and general expenditure. It is therefore, necessary to reserve finances and strengthen the position by obtaining new members. The courts are in good order, and when the retaining wall is built, the pavilion repainted, the courts and appointments will be comparable with the best hard courts in the Dominion.

From a playing point of view the season was hardly as successful as it might have been. With a large decrease in membership the season was well advanced before the courts were attended as expected. It is imperative that we make a better start for season 1934-35, and with this end in view, the annual meeting is called at an earlier date. We played the usual inter-club matches with the Hokitika and United Clubs and the games were greatly enjoyed by all members participating. Winners of Club Events.—Ladies singles. Miss Costello; ladies' doubles. Miss Costello and Miss Hopkins; ladies’ Handicap Singles. Miss Costello; gents’ Singles, Mr A. K. Smith. Miss Costello won every ladies’ event in the West Coast tennis championships at Westport. We held the annual ball, which resulted in a slight loss financially. However, it proved to be a social success. This success was due in no small measure to the energetic committee who are to be congratulated on the manner in which the ball was conducted and the way their guests’ enjoyment was catered for.
